๐ฉ Nelson's Plane¶

Acknowledgement: Like a few other pages in my notes, this is a re-telling of someone else's research. Most of the information came from RFM, as presented in Mormonism Live: Episode 033 and in Bill Reel's post in the /r/exmormon subreddit. Credit where it's due, thoughโ part of how I process information is to reframe it in my own words.
Since revelation is ongoing, and since Jesus affects us personally and individually, church leadership likes to tell stories from experience. This isn't bad. It seems to be a way to connect the intangible teachings to practical application.
Where problems arise, though, is when a story told to promote faith in God ends up being grossly embellished, or even demonstrably wrong. For a church that wants to foster trust, authority, authenticity, and guidance, this LDS church's leadership seems very comfortable with stretching the truth in order to make a point. If personal experiences from Apostles are not trustworthy, then how should we approach anything they tell us?
Key Elements¶
A fellow named Russell Marion Nelson tells us of a near-death experience as an airplane's engine explodes, but the plane narrowly avoided a crash by extinguishing a fire. This is all within the pretext of Nelson feeling a calm peacefulness, being at ease with the prospect of mortal life ending because of a variety of factors (worthiness, trust in Christ's atonement, having Garments on, etc.) Elder Nelson was composed and collected, despite having reason to believe that death was imminent.
To emphasize this point, Nelson contrasts his zen-like state to the woman across the aisle, completely flipping her shit because she's right next to an exploded plane engine, and the craft is diving much too fast for anyone present to feel comfortable with.
There's some variation in details between those accounts, but there are enough common points that we can summarize the experience into these key events:
- One of two engines on a small two-engine plane exploded and caught on fire
- The explosion spread flammable material onto the fuselage
- The plane descends at an unsafe speed, sometimes described as a "death spiral"; this causes the fire to extinguish
- The pilot "turned on the other engine"
- The plane makes an unplanned landing
Problems arise when this story's details are examined across the above sources, as well as compared to... you know, reality.
By my timeline estimation, this event took place in 1976. At the time, he was filling the calling of Sunday School President. He shares a dramatic experience of an airplane crash, an ordeal with a remarkably low survival rate, but he survives! Against all odds, God protected this one plane on this one instance to preserve Nelson's life, so that Nelson can later tell us to take vitamins. Fatalities from other airplane crashes just weren't meant to speak in General Conference.

I count 14 sources here for this story, acknowledging some overlapโ each source is well within the influence of the Church's correlation committee. Some of the video re-tellings are referencing the General Conference talk, as is the Friend Magazine as a more kid-friendly adaptation of this near-death experience (since, you know, children need to hear that kind of thing.)
For the audience, this story highlights that this Apostle was unbothered by the prospect of his mortal demise, having a grander, eternal perspective, and had no regrets before facing God's judgement. As for what exactly the audience should do with that information... well... see him as a role model, I guess?
Specific Details¶
- 1979: From Heart to Heart describes this incident as taking place on November 12, 1976, a flight from Salt Lake City to St. George Utah; "the pilot made a safe emergency landing in Delta. I was going to St. George to give the opening prayer at the inaugural services at which Rolfe Kerr became president of Dixie College."
- 2003: Father, Surgeon, Apostle expounds with more flavor text:
"The pilot had just announced that we were over the halfway point between Salt Lake City and St. George[...] Shortly after that, the engine on the right wing of the airplane burst open in flames, spewing oil all over the right side of the plane. The propeller became starkly still and the whole engine was on fire.
- 2011: In this YouTube video at 0:11, "the engine on the right wing caught fire. It exploded and burning oil as poured all over the right side of the airplane and we started to dive toward the earth. We were spinning down to our death." Later at 0:50, "We made an emergency landing out in a field."
- 2021: In the other YouTube video at 0:35, "the right engine suddenly exploded, spewing flaming fuel all over the right side of the plane."
We've got the following added detail:

In more recent iterations of General Conference, these kinds of anecdotal stories still appear once in a while, but are very much obfuscated. We'll hear about "a man whom I will call John," or "a letter I received from a sister," or "a colleague of mine from years ago." That isn't necessarily bad, as it respects the privacy of those involved. I draw attention to this to highlight the discrepancy between generic names of a friend of a friend, to specific tales outlining specific events in specific locations at specific times. This kind of specificity lets the audience fact-check the faith-promoting stories. This scrutiny does not always favor the church authorities who made their claims as we will see with Nelson's plane.

PART 830โNOTIFICATION AND REPORTING OF AIRCRAFT ACCIDENTS OR INCIDENTS AND OVERDUE AIRCRAFT, AND PRESERVATION OF AIRCRAFT WRECKAGE, MAIL, CARGO, AND RECORDS
Subpart BโInitial Notification of Aircraft Accidents, Incidents, and Overdue Aircraft
ยง 830.5 Immediate notification.
The operator of any civil aircraft, or any public aircraft not operated by the Armed Forces or an intelligence agency of the United States, or any foreign aircraft shall immediately, and by the most expeditious means available, notify the nearest National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) office, when:
(a) An aircraft accident or any of the following listed serious incidents occur:
(1) Flight control system malfunction or failure;
(4) In-flight fire;
(6) Damage to property, other than the aircraft, estimated to exceed $25,000 for repair (including materials and labor) or fair market value in the event of total loss, whichever is less.
(12) Any event in which an operator, when operating an airplane as an air carrier at a public-use airport on land:
(i) Lands or departs on a taxiway, incorrect runway, or other area not designed as a runway

I've ommitted some of the sub-points within these criteria of what necessitates reporting, since they're outside the scope of what I'm examining. If you really want to read more legal docs, there's five source links for your convenience.
My understanding is that American federal agencies don't have a good sense of humor about this kind of thing. If an aircraft's engine exploded, spreading flaming oil & fuel all over the fuselage, sending the plane into a tailspin, resulting in an emergency crash-landing in a field, the FAA wants to know about it. Even if it's a small six-passenger propeller aircraft.
Published FAA Report¶
And so, as it happens, the Civil Aeronautics Board has published records of reports. Volume 73 of these published reports describe an incident suspiciously similar to the broad description provided by Nelson's accounts of his near-death experience.

Second incident occurred Nov. 11, 1976 involving Piper PA 31 N74985. Pilot experienced rough engine on scheduled flight between Salt Lake City and St. George. 3 passengers on board. Engine was feathered and precautionary landing made at Delta, Utah, per instructions in company manual. ... No damage to aircraft. No injuries to crew or passengers.

I would describe engine feathering as twisting the propeller blades on their respective axes. Feathering an inoperable engine reduces drag so that the plane doesn't yaw, dragging it off course, as well as reducing unnecessary stress on the blades. Here's a link to a description and illustration.
A precautionary landing happens when "further flight is possible but inadvisable," and "are often made at an aerodrome although this is not always the case. Sometimes landing in a field (and accepting there will be damage to the aircraft) is preferable to trying to reach an aerodrome (and risk to be forced to land on worse terrain)."
This is in contrast to a forced landing, "where an aircraft unavoidably needs to land, usually regardless of terrain. A typical example of this is an airplane forced down by fuel exhaustion or failure of all engines." (1, 2, 3, 4)
What I read Nelson describe is a forced landing "in a farmer's field" after an engine's violent, fiery explosion. What I read in the FAA's Rocky Mountain Region report is a precautionary landing with "no damage to aircraft," precluding the outcome of landing in a field. For the pilot to feather the engine does indicate that continuing to operate safely wasn't an option, so something did go wrong.
Discrepancies¶
Other discrepancies I would call auxiliary to the core of this story. Nelson said November 12, the report said November 11; I think that's close enough.
Some of Nelson's accounts have variation on how many passengers were in the plane, and the report said 3. The number of passengers isn't really the point, so I don't think that is really worth emphasizing.
In most accounts, the pilot "turns on the other engine." I don't know enough about propeller airplanes to know why was the functional engine turned off. Maybe it was deactivated during their spiraling descent?
Nelson describes this event happening at approximately half way between SLC and St. George. Delta, UT is kinda-sorta in between themโ by my estimation using online mapping tools, Delta is 134 miles from SLC and 167 miles from SGU. This straight-line path is more direct than traveling by highway. If traveling south, I could imagine an engine failure at the half-way point causing a pilot to estimate that Delta is the closest aerodrome, even if it means turning around.
I feel satisfied that I've demonstrated that incidents mid-flight must be reported to the FAA. I feel satisfied that I've found a report that closely matches some of the key details of Nelson's story: the date & location, and some mechanical failure. We're left with the discrepancy between a fiery explosion leading to an emergency landing in a field, and a mechanical hiccup that led to a safe precautionary landing somewhere (presumably safe) in Delta, UT. Given the plane's lack of reported damage, I feel that it's safe to assume that the plane landed on a proper airstrip.
So... it appears to me that we have a lot of dramatic flair added to this story:
- The engine did not explode, nor catch fire
- The fuselage was not covered in flaming oil nor fuel
- The plane did not crash-land in a field
Each of those factors individually would necessitate an FAA / NTSB report. A combination of those factors would certainly draw public attentionโ what about the farmer whose field was ruined by a burnt plane's impact zone? Did this farmer receive up to $25,000 as outlined in the FAA's guidelines for a forced landing in an "other area not designed as a runway?"
Local Impact¶
Delta, UT's population rose from 1,610 to 1,930 between 1970 and 1980 census. I guess I could assume that the town's population in 1976 of 1610+(1930-1610)*.6 = 1802
found this incident to be uninteresting? I've lived in small towns before. Even if an airplane crashed into a farmer's field from the next town over, that would be the only thing the town would be known for during the next ten years.
I guess the only way for me, today in 2025, to know if any of those ~1800 people thought that a burning plane crashing into their neighbor's field is newsworthy is to check their newspaper. What I've found is Millard County's paper, Fillmore Progress, which county includes the town of Delta.
So, unless Utah's Digital Newspapers archive is being controlled by Satan himself to make sure nobody finds information that contradicts what Russell tells us, I should expect to see anything other than high school football teams and insurance advertisements. You know, maybe a headline like "flaming airplane destroys Leroy's farmโ Mormon Sunday School President onboard, no injuries reported."
What do we find instead? Funeral services for the former mayor. This guy can help you reupholster your couch. Mrs. Stella Day had knee surgery. holy shit you guys Santa's coming to the mall next week! On the same page as the mayor's passing is "Millard Eagles defeated the Delta Rabbits and earned a spot in the State Finals"! ... What's that? An airplane crashing in Craig's farm? I mean, we could talk about that, or we could talk about teachers getting a 9% pay raise.
Huh. Maybe they just made a precautionary landing in Delta Municipal Airport and nothing was on fire. ... Except this guy's house.
What actually happened, then?¶
I mean, it wasn't all a lie— there was an airplane, after all.
Really, though, I wasn't alive present. Were I to speculate, I would say that Nelson was one of a small number of passengers flying from SLC to SGU, and an engine failed resulting in some startling turbulence. The pilot took the appropriate steps to minimize risks and made a precautionary landing in Delta well before the plane was in critical danger.
An engine failing probably shook the small plane, which would be upsetting and frightening to any passenger. Nelson likely saw another passenger panicking, and ruminated on the experience after the factโ considering that "if we really were all spiraling toward death, I'd feel alright with my conscience and moral standing." And since no one else present would corroborate what happened... that engine just fucken blew up and there was flaming oil and smoke everywhere and we were definitely in a tailspin, it really donked up this farmer's field after we crash-landed. That lady over there was freaking out, but I was really chill and definitely not at all worried or scared.
If you want to make the argument that Nelson's crashing plane was actually just one day later than the reported precautionary landing in the same location for the same reason, in the same flight from SLC to SGU, but had worse mechanical failures and somehow evaded all public attention or mandatory reporting, then by all means, make that argument. Just know that if you stand by that claim, you'll also take on the burden of proof after reading what I've presented here.
Mythology¶
Assuming this story is heavily embellished—and all I can really offer is speculation—I'd call our attention back to an earlier section in these notes: what was the point of this story, assuming it was all true? Are we meant to keep our composure in the face of certain death, as Nelson had, because we understand Christ's atonement? Are we meant to always be conscientious of our worthiness and moral standing before God's judgment? Was the story meant to underscore how the "real" achievements in life are contingent upon temple ordinances, therefore we should set our sights there? ... All of the above?
Under close examination, this story seems to have been reduced from "inevitable chaotic death" to "oh whoops, one of my engines stopped, we better land in that airport behind us in case things get out of hand." Is that bad? If the pretense of the story is impending doom, and that pretense does not hold up under scrutiny, is the message diminished? If our narrator was not in danger, was danger the catalyst for his introspection?
I'll approach this question from another angle: I could describe to you a near-death experience where I was an accosted by a laser-shooting dinosaur, narrowly escaping with my life, but it really made me think about how important identity theft protection is. The "moral" of this hypothetical, fabricated story is good advice, even if the context is nonsense.
Therein lies the value that I see in mythology. I've got some notes on it in that link, but the take-home message is that fiction can still have valueโ truthfulness is not a precondition for value. Was this story of Nelson surviving a flame-engulfed plane crashing into a field all a myth? If it was intended to be presented as myth, it could still hold value. But instead it is presented as objective truth that falls apart under scrutiny, and so I will argue that its value is tarnished.
